Internal Frame Backpacks

If you're considering a backpack purchase, an internal frame backpack may be a smart choice.

Internal frame backpacks, although not exactly new, have only been around since the late 1970s. That doesn't mean that they are automatically the choice for any hiking or camping trip. There are several things to consider before deciding on an internal or external frame backpack.

Buying an Internal Frame Backpack

As with most things, the prices on internal frame backpacks vary greatly. Some of the very inexpensive backpacks may not be of very good quality, there are some lower priced packs that are of decent quality.

If you're just getting started in hiking or camping, you may not want to lay down a lot of money until you know if it's an activity that you will keep doing. Honestly, I can't imagine anyone going on an adventure-filled hike, or camping trip in the great outdoors, and not falling in love with it.

Regardless, you may just want to save some money and get a less expensive pack, and there are some excellent internal frame backpacks priced well below $100. Of course you can also spend many times more than that also. It's really great if you can get advise from an experienced hiker or camper.

Which Internal Frame Backpack ?

Proper Fit

Before buying an internal frame backpack, it is extremely important that you check the specifications to make sure that the backpack you want will be a proper fit for you. One way to ruin a hike is to have a poorly fitting backpack. By measuring your toros, and then checking the manufacturer's specifications, you can be sure to get a backpack that fits you. Many models come in small, medium and large.

One manufacturer's listing uses the following size specifications in relationship to your torso size in inches....less than 185 (Small), 18-205 (Medium), more than 20 (Large).

Capacity

Although there can't be an exact capacity figure put on a backpack for everyone, because of different needs, or wants, in what you will be packing, there are some general recommendations as to capacity. Just remember, the length of your trip, terrain, weather, personal habits and other specifics, may dictate that your capacity needs are far different than someone else may have going on a similar trip.

The following is published data by Teton Sports, a manufacturer of many excellent backpacks.

Packs in the 3,000 cubic inches and lower category are good for day hikes or overnighters in warm weather with minimal gear. Packs in the 3,000 to 4,000 cubic inch range are good for one- or two-night trips in colder weather. If you're going to be out for up to three days, look for a pack in the sub-4,000 cubic inch range. Choose a pack with 5,000-6,000 cubic inches for week-long outings. And finally, for trips lasting a week or more, you'll need something in the 6,000-plus cubic inch category. Keep in mind, though, that bigger packs weigh more, and since every ounce counts, you'll want to choose a pack that offers just enough space for your outings and no more.

So, due your homework and know what price range, as well as other specifics, such as intended use that you will have, and then start comparing internal frame backpacks that will fulfill your needs.

Normally I purchase nearly everything I buy online at Amazon. Their price, selection, customer service, shipping prices (if not free) and speed can't be beat. Also, many (most ?) of their items have their Super Saving Shipping. It makes Amazon a no-brainer.

An Internal Frame Backpack May Be right for You

Generally speaking, an internal frame backpack may suit you better if you go hiking or camping in an area that would require more freedom of movement, especially in the arms.

Because internal frame backpacks are carried closer to the body, with the contents compressed more tightly, you will have more freedom of movement in the arms, and the contents of your backpack won't move around, possibly causing you to lose your balance.

Also, internal frame backpacks might make it a little more inconvenient if you're having to retrieve contents from your pack quickly or often. Although most backpacks usually have enough additional pockets or pouches to carry items that you may need to get to quickly and easily.
